=== Modern occurrence === During the post Civil war period in Spain, there were several outbreaks of lathyrism, caused by the shortage of food, which led people to consume excessive amounts of almorta flour. In Spain, a seed mixture known as comuña consisting of Lathyrus sativus, L. cicera, Vicia sativa and V. ervilia provides a potent mixture of toxic amino acids to poison monogastric (single stomached) animals. Particularly the toxin β-cyanoalanine from seeds of V. sativa enhances the toxicity of such a mixture through its inhibition of sulfur amino acid metabolism (conversion of methionine to cysteine leading to excretion of cystathionine in urine) and hence depletion of protective reduced thiols. Its use for sheep does not pose any lathyrism problems if doses do not exceed 50 percent of the ration.

=== Water purification === Graphite oxides were studied for desalination of water using reverse osmosis beginning in the 1960s. In 2011, additional results from research were published. In 2013, Lockheed Martin announced their Perforene graphene filter. Lockheed claims the filter reduces energy costs for reverse osmosis desalination by 99%. Lockheed claimed that the filter was 500 times thinner than the best filter on the market, 1,000 times stronger, and required 1% of the pressure. The product was not expected to be released until 2020. Another study showed that graphite oxide could be engineered to allow water to pass while retaining some larger ions. Narrow capillaries allow rapid permeation by mono- or bilayer water. Multilayer laminates have a structure similar to nacre, which provides mechanical strength in water-free conditions. Helium cannot pass through the membranes in humidity-free conditions, but penetrates easily when exposed to humidity, whereas water vapor passes with no resistance. Dry laminates are vacuum-tight, but immersed in water, they act as molecular sieves, blocking some solutes. A third project produced graphene sheets with subnanoscale (0.40 ± 0.24 nm) pores. The graphene was bombarded with gallium ions, which disrupt carbon bonds. Etching the result with an oxidizing solution produces a hole at each spot struck by a gallium ion. In October and December 1994, King Crimson recorded their eleventh studio album, Thrak, at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios. Containing revised versions of the songs from Vrooom, plus some new tracks, the album was described by Q magazine as having "jazz-scented rock structures, characterised by noisy, angular, exquisite guitar interplay" and an "athletic, ever-inventive rhythm section", while being in tune with the sound of alternative rock of the mid-1990s. Examples of the band's efforts to integrate their multiple elements could be heard on the accessible (but complex) songs "Dinosaur" and "Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream", the more straightforward ballad "One Time", as well as "Radio I" and "Radio II"- a pair of Fripp's Soundscapes instrumentals. King Crimson resumed touring in 1995 and into 1996. Dates from October and November 1995 were recorded and released on the live album Thrakattak in May 1996, which is an hour of improvised music integrating sections from performances of Thrak's title track in the United States and Japan as mixed and arranged into a single work by David Singleton. In rail transport, the Single European Railway Directive 2012 requires that ownership of tracks and operating companies are separated to prevent conflicts of interest and pricing, particularly to ensure that trains can run from one member state to another. == Etiopathogenesis == Recent studies suggest that the pathogenesis of DM is driven by the pathogenic internalization of autoantibodies. Although these antibodies target intracellular proteins, evidence indicates that they can enter different cell types and disrupt the function of their target autoantigens causing inflammation and damage. For example, anti-Mi-2 autoantibodies bind PHD-containing proteins, including component of the NuRD complex, inducing derepression of multiple genes, and in anti-MDA5 dermatomyositis, autoantibodies activate MDA5 directly inducing the activation of type I interferon pathways. The type I interferon pathway is especially prominent in DM and has become a major therapeutic target. Clinical responses to JAK inhibitors, anti-IFNβ therapy, and agents targeting the interferon receptor support the importance of this pathway in disease activity. Conversely, a negative trial of complement inhibition in immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy has challenged earlier models in which complement-mediated muscle injury was considered central to that subtype. The characteristic pathological feature is perifascicular muscle involvement, often accompanied by vasculopathy. Plasma cells are found in close proximity to affected areas with high type I interferon expression and have been observed to externalize immunoglobulin heavy- and light-chain RNA into surrounding muscle cells, suggesting that this may be a potential mechanism for immunoglobulin entry into affected cell types shared across different forms of DM.
=== Efficacy of medication and psychotherapy === Antidepressants are statistically superior to placebo but their overall effect is low-to-moderate. In that respect they often did not exceed the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence criteria for a "clinically significant" effect. In particular, the effect size was very small for moderate depression but increased with severity, reaching "clinical significance" for very severe depression. These results were consistent with the earlier clinical studies in which only patients with severe depression benefited from either psychotherapy or treatment with an antidepressant, imipramine, more than from the placebo treatment. Despite obtaining similar results, the authors argued about their interpretation. One author concluded that there "seems little evidence to support the prescription of antidepressant medication to any but the most severely depressed patients, unless alternative treatments have failed to provide benefit." The other author agreed that "antidepressant 'glass' is far from full" but disagreed "that it is completely empty". He pointed out that the first-line alternative to medication is psychotherapy, which does not have superior efficacy. Antidepressants in general are as effective as psychotherapy for major depression, and this conclusion holds true for both severe and mild forms of MDD. In contrast, medication gives better results for dysthymia. The subgroup of SSRIs may be slightly more efficacious than psychotherapy.
